PITTSBURGH-The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh recently removed "priestly faculties" from Rev. Richard Ginder, the controversial priest whose book, Binding with Briars: Sex and Sin in the Catholic Church (Prentice-Hall), calls for extreme liberalization of church teaching on birth control, homosexuality, and premarital sex. Ginder, 62, who has not had a regular assignment in the diocese since 1964, will no longer be allowed to say mass, hear confessions, or preach sermons here. The Bishop's action followed by just a few weeks Ginder's January appearance on the nationally-syndicated television program, The Phil Donahue Show, where he promoted his book and reiterated the views expressed in it.
Sales of the book have been disappointingly small and Ginder's future plans, if any, are unclear. At present he is still living in Pittsburgh, though in his own apartment and not in any church-maintained residence.
